The Best Workout Hairstyles, According to Hair Type

Ever wonder why your friend’s perfectly coiffed ponytail stays in place through a long, hard workout and your droops within seconds? Well, just as with everything in life, what works for one person, might not for another. How you style your strands for a workout (and how they look after) depends largely on your hair type. Not sure what your ideal style is? We chatted with Cynthia Alvarez, Celebrity Hairstylist for Dove Hair, to learn her pro tips for preserving every type of hairstyle through a workout.

Workout hairstyle

For maintaining bouncier, smooth blowout: Alvarez says rolling your hair into a sock bun or hair donut would help keep the smooth shape of this style. “Add a tiny bit of dry oil like Dove Regenerative Nourishment Serum-in-Oil to the ends before tucking them in,” she says. And avoid pins! “The problem with using pins is that they will leave indents on the hair—not to mention pins are not the most comfortable if you’re working out!” she says.

For reviving curls: Flip your head upside down and lightly finger comb through your hair to breakup any knots, she says. Gather all of your hair into a pony at the highest point of your head and secure looselywith a hair tie. “Be careful not to tighten the hair tie or it will create an unwanted crease,” she adds.
Pro tip: roll the hair into the direction of your curls and secure with a hair pin to maintain your curly Q’s post gym session.

For preserving beach waves: For maintaining your look just-off-the-beach look, begin by spraying a dry shampoo, such as Dove Refresh + Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo, on your roots at the crown of your head. This removes oil and adds volume. At your part, create a French braid going down to the nape of your neck and secure it loosely with a hair tie. Twist the braid and wrap it around the base, securing with open pins, adds Alvarez. Lightly spray the finished look with your fave hairspray and you’re good to go.

How to Make Your Blowout Last Through a 5K

For anyone who’s ever sacrificed a good hair day in favor of a workout, listen up! Now you no longer have to give up your pretty mane in order to break a sweat. We chatted with two top hairstylists to learn how you can preserve your blowout, waves, or styled strands through a sweaty workout sesh. Heck, even a summer 5K doesn’t stand a chance!

Keep sweat at bay: The first step to keeping your blowout pristine through that morning run or yoga class is to keep sweat in its place. “This may not be the most fashionable thing to wear to the gym, but a headband will definitely keep the sweat under control,” explains Cynthia Alvarez, Celebrity Hairstylist for Dove Hair. She suggests opting for a cotton wrap rather than a satin one because cotton helps to absorb excess oil. And surprisingly, this is also one time you might actually want to reach for product. Alvarez explains applying a small amount of anti-frizz product to the root of the hair will aid in fighting sweat.

Ban frizz: Inevitably, if frizz does occur, don’t panic. A blast of air and dry shampoo can salvage your style. “Blowdry your hair while it’s still in your bun, so you don’t lose any volume and help keep the frizz at bay,” explains senior stylist Jill Engelsen at Butterfly Studio in New York. After blow drying, she suggests applying a little dry shampoo—she prefers Kerastase Powder Bluff—at your roots, namely only on your hairline and part. “The trick is holding the can six inches away and spraying in a sweeping motion,” she says. “Then, mimic your shampoo routine on your scalp to work the dirt and oil away!” Finally, finish the rest of the hair with a brush and blowdyer.

Not super sweaty? Ditch the dry shampoo altogether. “After your workout, if you have a minimal amount of sweat, toss your head upside-down and use only the cool air setting on the hairdryer to blast the sweat away,” explains Alvarez. “Heat makes the hair malleable, so blasting a dryer with the warmer settings on any blowout post-workout would then flop any hope of your hair recovering!” Who knew?

Cross out the crease: Often times, creased hair is a runner or gym-goers red badge of honor. But for those times you’d rather not walk around with a dent in your mane, reach for your blow dryer to revive locks. Engelsen suggests switching your blow dryer to high and holding the creased pieces of hair tightly while running heat over the area. Let hair cool to set in!

This weeks fitness update

The achievements I got so far:

This week I completed 3 challenges:

F-16: for lifting a total of 20 000 kilo’s.

Going strong: for being active for over 10 hours.

Crunch: for doing 200 crunches.

Squatter (the actual one, the last one had another name in Dutch but I the translation is the same): for doing 150 squats.

Push it: this one is for doing push ups, but it didn’t say how much.

Zippo: for burning a total of 5000 calories.

Powerhunk (or something like that): for doing my first 50 power exercises.

Around the corner: this one is for going on walks, but it also didn’t say the amount of steps, the distance or anything of the sort.

The challenges I completed:

Doing 20 pushups in one rep.

Burning 2000 calories a week.

Next week I’ll do these again and try to burn 3000 calories and do 50 pushups in one rep. Well, to be honest with you, the pushups I do aren’t the regular ones so it’s not all that impressive. Maybe I’ll even be able to do the plank for 2 minutes.

My stats after this week are:

6532 calories burned (+3536)

1035 minutes of activity (+642)

56 km (+29)

1324 fitness points (+7548)

(you get these when doing challenges, getting achievements and doing sport in general I believe)

I’ll give an update on my stats every week and I’ll mention everything else aswell..

I started going to Basic-Fit

For about 2 weeks now, I’ve been going to the fitness, Basic-Fit. For those who don’t know this, it is rather cheap and it has 419 clubs in Europe, 159 of them are here in Belgium. So, it is very popular here.

My gym’s slogan: Making the world a FITTER place! I absolutely love this slogan, it is funny and motivating.

They also have a personal app you can download in the App Store and on Google Play, so far I really like it, you can get achievements and do challenges.

The achievements I got so far:

Diary: I got this for posting my very first post on my profile.

Squater: for doing 75 squats.

Cardio-starter: for doing my 20 first cardio activities.

Say Cheese!: uploading a profile picture.

Dumbo: for lifting a total of 5000 kilograms.

Active: being active for more than 100 minutes.

Lucifer: for burning my first 1000 calories.

First step: going to they gym for the first time.

This week I completed 3 challenges:

Doing 50 squats in one rep.

Doing 50 crunches in one rep.

Burning 1000 calories a week.

Next week I’ll do these again and try to burn 2000 calories! But I am starting school again on monday so going to the gym will be a bit more difficult but I’ll do my best!

My stats after this week are:

2996 calories burned

393 minutes of activity

27 km

5695 fitness points (you get these when doing challenges, getting achievements and doing sport in general I believe)

I’ll give an update on my stats every week and will do short posts when I did a challenge or got another achievement.

Unexpected Ways To Find Your Zen

For yogis, finding your intention is a constant goal. To help you locate your own, first ask yourself, “What do I want to bring into my life?” Whether it’s stress relief, self-love, or happiness—your first step is to set your goal and you guessed it, intention. To help you sort through your thoughts and goals, we created this guide to help you locate the gemstone (and corresponding products!) you need to jumpstart your intention search!

For those in search of stress relief:

Go all out spiritual with amethyst:

Amethyst will help expose your inner strength, allowing you to grow spiritually and find mental clarity and protection. It’s great to keep in your home for a lighthearted, positive energy vibe.

If amethyst is a little hard to locate, you can get instant relief with Massage and Stretching Foam or Aroma Therapy & Natural Air Purifying Lamp instead.

Stretch

For those in search of luck:

Go all out spiritual with aventurine:

This stone will attract luck, abundance, and success. By harmonizing and protecting your heart chakra, aventurine turns your dreams into reality. (And for those who don’t know, chakra is the center of spiritual power in the human body.)

Good fortune may also come to those who don this Dogeared Good Luck Necklace:

Good Luck

For those in search of happiness:

Go all out spiritual with citrine:

Fueled by the sun, citrine will fill you with light and happiness. By activating mental activity, it will enhance your imagination, helping to create a positive outlook on your very sacred life in general.

And of course, beauty lovers can get their happiness glow on with the help of self tanner or a journal of 365 Days Of Inspiration, Gratitude, and Joy

Self Tanner

For those in search of wisdom:

Go all out spiritual with lapis lazuli:

Connected to a higher truth, lapis lazuli leads you to spiritual gardens and shields you from negative energy. Any negative vibrations will be pushed back towards their source.

Too much work for you? Get “instant” wisdom (or at least get an instant laugh!) with a Magic 8 Ball.

For those in search of healing:

Go all out spiritual with mother of pearl

Associated with elements of water and the ocean, this powerful healing pearl will alleviate any fear while promoting an open mind. Through this, you’ll be able to see the beauty in everything. What can’t be fixed by the salt water, salt air, or salty tears cannot be fixed!

If the beach is a bit too out of reach for you, we have a feeling you’ll feel instantly healed with a spritz of Benefit Cosmetics Ultra-Radiance Facial Rehydrating Mist:

Facial Mist

For those in search of a cleanse:

Go all out spiritual with obsidian:

Obsidian, made from volcanic rock, is said to be grounding. Like volcanic rock at the Earth’s core, it will bring your spirits deep into the core of your issue and remove any negative energy there. You’ll feel a release of emotions such as anger, fear, jealousy, and greed.

If all else fails, a juice cleanse like this one from Urban Remedy may be the answer.

Cleanse

For those in search of self-love:

Go all out spiritual with rhodochrosite:

Self-love, self-worth, whatever you’d like to call it—rhodochrosite is in tune with your heart chakra and promotes emotional healing, giving you the courage to face things you once feared.

Honestly, we can’t imagine a better way to treat yo’self than with a spa day in the tub, featuring a Lush Bath Bomb:

Bath Bomb

For those in search of a master healer:

Go all out spiritual with turquoise:

If you can’t decide what it is you’re looking for, turquoise is a great first stone to have. This master healer is said to be the bridge between Heaven, Sky, and Earth. It connects your mind to the endless possibilities of the universe, encouraging honest, open communication from the heart. All of your chakras will be aligned, strengthening your whole self.

Lastly, a much simpler and equally fun way to find a master healer is through your favorite playlist on Spotify. Sometimes nothing can help you reach inner peace more so than some R&R with mellow background music
