Mythbusters: Why Your Lips Are Actually Chapped

Just because it’s frigid outside doesn’t mean we have to let our pout game suffer. How can we fight chapped lips in the midst of the crisp fall weather scene?  We turned to the experts for advice.

Why lip balm might not be working for you at the moment: Dr. Shevanti Jegasothy, Cosmetic Dermatologist at Miami Skin Institute, says that if you become toodependent on waxed-based lip products, your lips may start to lose all their dead cell layers. This ultimately makes your lips more prone to irritation and chapping. So, like everything else, moderation is key!

Lip balms recommended by the pros: For dry winter months, Dr. Jegasothy advocates waxy lip barriers such as ChapStick Classic, Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, and waxy colored lip pencils–her favorite is MAC Chestnut! “These waxed-based products provide an extra barrier to the skin of the lips, which does not have as much stratum corneum (dead cell layers) as the rest of the skin, which provides our customary (highly-effective) skin barrier against water loss and holds our body’s moisture in,” says Dr. Jegasothy.

Similar to Dr. Jegasothy, Dr. Hadley King, dermatologist at NYC’s SKINNEY Medspaalso recommends Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, plus Aquaphor Healing Ointment.

The best way to treat dry lips: Since environmental pollutants, excess sun, and wind can cause a mild chronic eczema on the lips, Dr, Jegasothy recommends soaking your lips with warm water and gently brushing with a clean, soft-bristle toothbrush in a circular motion for two minutes on each lip twice a week. Then, apply Polysporin to any of the fissured areas, followed by Cortizone 10. Think of it as little lip facial you can enjoy five minutes before applying lipstick!
