There is nothing worse than creating a killer makeup look only to have it melt off your face by noon. In order to take a stand against melty makeup and shiny foreheads this summer, we tapped professional makeup artist, Juliette Perreux, to spill on some of her expert tips for keeping shine at bay during the hot and humid months. Take a peek at some of her favorite tips and products for eliminating shine this summer!
Tip 1: Create a good base
When it comes to prep, Juliette suggests stepping up your exfoliation and facial game. “Keep your skin healthy and clean, this is the first step to any makeup look. Exfoliate twice weekly, I recommend ExfoliKate by Kate Sommerville. Or, try monthly facials! This may be too pricey for some, but if you can budget for them, you will see a difference in your skin. When your pores are clogged and full of dirt, oil and sweat have nowhere to go but on top of the skin, which causes your makeup to run and skin look shiny.”
Tip 2: Moisturize and mattify
Juliette truly believes many of our shiny skin woes can be fixed by using a few key products. Although it seems counterintuitive, she says to, “always use a moisturizer under makeup, try Murad’s Essential C Day Cream, which also doubles as a sunscreen with SPF 30 built in. Next, layer on a primer like Laura Mercier’s Foundation Primeror any mattifying gel.”
Tip 3: Lightweight foundation is your friend
Juliette swears by a few lightweight foundations and thinks they could change the game for you, too. “Use a lightweight foundation or BB/CC cream that won’t melt off your skin. Try NARS Skin Tint for lightweight coverage and if you need a little more I recommend Makeup Forever Ultra HD Foundation, which you can layer depending on the coverage you need. Apply with a beauty blender sponge to soak up extra product and distribute evenly.”
Tip 4: Keep touch-up necessities nearby
It’s pretty easy to follow these steps as you prep to prevent shiny skin, but what happens when you’re already outside in the hot, humid summer sun? “Finish with my favorite Translucent Loose Setting Powder by Laura Mercier. To soak up any excess oil using a Sigma Powder Brush. But, never over layer your powder. A light dusting will do. Too much powder will look way too heavy in the heat. I also highly suggest carrying oil blotting sheets for touch ups during the summer months. If you keep loading on powder when you’re sticky and sweaty you will start to look cakey. The key in the heat is less is more.”
