Fashion tips for short girls can cover a range of topics. From the colours you wear to what styles of clothes to avoid, there seems to be a wealth of dos and don’ts out there. While my main fashion tip for short girls is to have confidence and stand tall, if creating the illusion of extra height is what you want to achieve then take a look at the following fashion tips for shorter girls.
HOW TO LOOK TALLER
SAY YES TO HIGH HEELS
One of the most obvious and embraced fashion tips for short girls is to wear heeled shoes. Whether you’re after a bit of a lift or added inches, a pair of heeled shoes will physically give you extra height. If you’re not used to teetering around in stilettos, why not try a ‘safer’ option like a wedge shoe?
Here’s small trick that can change the way you shoe shop: Shoes that have a low-cut vamp instantely elongate your leg (and make them look slimmer, as well) when you’re wearing skirts, shorts, and dresses.
What’s a vamp? It’s the portion of a show that cuts across your foot at the front. So, a low vamp cuts across the base of the toes, while high vamp can come up the foot and possibly up to the ankle. If you’re able to find a pair that matches your skintone, like the image above, that’s even better to give the illusion of mile-long legs.
WEAR HIGH WAISTED STYLES
Creating the appearance of being taller is all about proportions. Wearing high waisted shorts, pants or skirts creates a kind of optical illusion. The higher waist leads to the appearance of longer legs and thus a more willowy silhouette.
High-waist bottoms get a bad rap, possibly thanks to an unfortunate Jessica Simpson style mishap, but when worn correctly, they can trick the eye into thinking you’re taller by elongating your lower body. Whether you choose skirts, shorts or skinny jeans, be sure to make the elevated waist visible by tucking in a tailored blouse, or opting for a slightly cropped top.
When choosing a pair of pants, avoid cropped styles. Pants that finish above the shoe can also create the appearance of thicker legs. You want a hem that covers most of your shoe as this will give the appearance of longer legs.
Fitted jeans with a distinct flare at the bottom create the illusion of a longer leg— especially when the hem hits the top of your shoes (heels, of course!) The trick here is to keep the fit of the jean super-slim through the leg, and to make sure the waistband hits your natural waist—not any lower. For optimal height, be sure to pair your flares with a waist-length top, or a blouse you can tuck in.
WEAR DARKER COLOURS
Wearing dark colours can give you a sleeker, streamlined appearance. That’s why we have the whole ‘black is slimming’ theory, right? Wearing dark colours together can help create an elongated silhouette for shorter girls.
When it comes to fashion tips for short girls, don’t overlook accessories. The right accessories can have a huge impact on your overall look. Shorter girls should opt for a smaller handbag, as oversized ‘it’ bags can swamp your silhouette and make you look shorter than you are.
Keeping your accessories appropriately scaled to your body size is a smart move for petite girls, starting with that oversized bag. Here’s why: Every time you cause the eye to take in width, you reduce the amount of height it takes in. That means smaller cross-body bags, clutches, and small top-handle totes are your best bet.
WATCH THE NECKLINE
V-shapes and U-shaped necklines also aid the illusion of height for short and petite girls. They can also be much more flattering than high necklines and collars.
ROCK A TOP KNOT
Obvious, yes, but piling your hair on top of your head really does gives a taller impression, again creating a more vertical line. Same goes for hair that’s simply voluminous—it adds inches! Time to put away that flatiron, friends.
AVOID THESE FASHION TRENDS
You’re short, and that’s great—but maybe you don’t want to appear that way. While actual growth is out of the question, you can change the way you appear by knowing what not to wear.
Don’t be offended, but these tops were not made for short women.
While we worship at the temple of The Olsens, remember how they used to wear lots of layers and fabric circa 2005? Not our favourite look.
Comfortable? Yes. Flattering? Not so much.
SILK WIDE-LEG TROUSERS
To give the illusion of height, try a wide-leg trouser in a structured fabric.
Flip those lines around! Instantly grow an inch or two by wearing vertical stripes.
It’s the oldest trick in the book for a reason: Vertical stripes create long lines, thus making you look, well, longer. Bonus: Stripes are one of spring’s biggest trends, so you’ll have absolutely no problem locating some cute striped options.
Unfortunately, this hemline is just unflattering on short women. We suggest stocking up on knee-length skirts! The same goes for pants, do not wear those bermuda pants!
If you’re going to show some skin, go all out with a dress that hits above the knee. The in-between hemline of a tea-length dress isn’t ideal for petite frames.
When you’re petite, it’s just a fact that—when it comes to skirts and dresses—you should either go super-long, or super-short (translation: avoid calf-length and knee-lengths). Mini-skirts show more skin, which creates the illusion of a longer leg. Here, petite It-girl Miroslava Duma pairs her mini-skirt with a matching top (see tip #6!) and sky-high platforms.
While ankle straps typically aren’t ideal for short ladies (they cut off your leg), they can work with super-short skirts since more skin is being shown. Of course, if you’re wearing a mini, make sure it’s not offensively short—let’s keep it chic, ladies.
No matter how short or tall you are you’ll only look as fabulous as you feel. It’s important then to exude confidence, whatever you’re wearing. These are just a few fashion tips for short girls that can give the illusion of added height. Are you on the shorter end of the height spectrum? What’s your best fashion tip for short girls?
